There are 3 main categories of pearls:
Akoya Pearls
Fresh Water Pearls
South Sea Pearls
Akoya Pearls
Akoya pearls are saltwater (sea) pearls from coastal areas of southern Japan.
Their main characteristic is their perfect round shape and shine.
Akoya pearls come from saltwater oysters and are mainly produced in Japan.
They are the classic white pearls, known since antiquity, which began to be cultivated at the beginning of the 20th century, so that they were accessible to every woman.
Sizes: From 3mm to 11mm with commercial sizes from 4mm to 9mm.
Colors: White, Cream, Pink, Black and Gray.
Origin: Japan

Fresh Water Pearls
They are freshwater pearls that are cultivated in closed lagoons, estuaries and lakes.
They are the most widespread pearls today throughout the world with the greatest variety in size and shape that are applicable to all kinds of jewelry.
Their main characteristic is that they are never perfectly round. They were originally available in lower quality as a cheap alternative to Akoya pearls.
Since the 1990s, their systematic cultivation has evolved with special expertise from Japanese companies and a new quality of rounded and shiny freshwater pearls has emerged, giving buyers a greater variety of choices in size, shape and color. Freshwater pearls come from freshwater oysters and are produced mainly in China.
Sizes: From 2mm to 17mm with commercial sizes from 4mm to 12mm
Colors: White, Cream, Pink, treated Black and Gray.
Origin: China, Japan

South Sea Pearls
South Sea pearls are saltwater - open sea pearls from areas of northern Australia (White color), Tahiti (Black color) and Indonesia (Gold color).
Their main characteristic is their large size, shine and natural coloring.
South Sea pearls come from saltwater - open-sea shells and are produced mainly in seas north of Australia.
Sizes: From 9mm to 20mm with commercial sizes from 11mm to 13mm.
Colors: White, Black, Cream, Silver and Gold.
Origin: Australia, Indonesia, Tahiti and the Philippines.
